MINUTES of FALL MEETING – OCTOBER 17, 2005

 

OHSAA ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOARD ROOM

 

1.                    President Joe Balogh welcomed everyone.

 

2.                    Rich Venuto, District 4 Director led us in prayer.

 

3.                    Secretary, Bob Von Kaenel read roll call.  Those absent were as follows:   Amy Manco, and Dave Krauss

 

4.                    Minutes from Bob Von Kaenel for Sept. 25,, 2004 were accepted. 1st – Walsh, 2nd – Gorski.

 

5.                    Treasurer’s Report by Wayne Wiseman was accepted. 1st – Rettig, 2nd - Persin.

 

6.                    Wayne Wiseman gave Election Results.  Winners were as follows: Sean O’Toole- Euclid (2), Joe Bogdan- East Canton (4), Greg Nossaman- Willard (6), Jeff Heistan-  Lima Shawnee (8), Bob Miller- Thomas Worthington (10), Dan Schwieterman- Shenandoah (12), Tom Barrick- Wheelersburg (14), Bill Brewer- Princeton (16)

G.A.C. – Amy Manco- Avon Lake (2,3); Dave Schlabach- Hiland (5,12); Jerry Sigler- Northview (7,8); Mary Jo Huismann- Mother of Mercy (15,16)

7.                    Membership ReportWayne Wiseman. As of 10/17/05 we have nearly 2,200 members.

 

8.                    Pre-paid Legal Services Presentation – Ed Kavanaugh made a presentation for the OHSBCA to consider as a representative to a pre-paid legal service. The directors voted 16-0 against this program.

 

9.                   National Federation Report – Tom Rettig - Tom announced the Coaches of the Year for Ohio to be nominated for the National Federation Award.  Representing Ohio will be: Girls Coach of the Year – Dick Heller (Oak Harbor HS)  Boys Coach of the Year – Bob Von Kaenel (Dover HS)

 

10.                District Director Reports –

 

District 1 – Dan Gorski  (Boardman) – Bench Rules; Support 22-game proposal

 

District 2 – Sean O’Toole (Euclid) – Would like more off-season time with athletes

 

District 3 – Bob Walsh (Elyria) – Oppose new coaches box limits; NE District Board tournament sites in regards to geographics; complaint about the quality of the Rawlings Basketball; would like a uniform seeding process for the entire state

 

District 4 – Joe Bogdan (East Canton) – None

 

District 5 – Joe Dunlevy (Indian Creek) – None

 

District 6 - Greg Nossaman (Willard) – Continue support of the 22-game proposal

 

District 7 – Ken Burgei (Wauseon) – Would like Free Throw Rule to change; Want individual workout sessions in the off-season

 

District 8 – Jeff Heistan (Shawnee) – None

 

District 9 – Tom Rettig (Tippecanoe) – Would like one vote per school for the North/South Game representative

 

District 10 – Bob Miller (Thomas Worthington) – Continue support of the 22-game proposal; oppose coaching box change

 

District 11 – Pete Liptrap(Pickerington North)– Continue support of 22-game proposal; oppose coaching box change

 

District 12 – Dan Schwieterman (Shenandoah) – Question? Why is basketball the only sport with 2 dead periods?

 

District 13 – Norm Persin (Chesapeake) – concerns about the Sectional/District Tournament in D-IV for Southeast and Central District; SE Board is fighting this change to combine the Southeast and Central sections for D-IV

 

District 14 – Tom Barrick (Wheelersburg) – concern about the Girls State Tournament being played at St. John Arena; Oppose the coaching box change; same concerns as District 13 in regards to their tournament

 

District 15 – James Staley (Centerville) – Continue support of 22-game proposal; Support a pre-season workout proposal; Oppose coaching box change

 

District 16 – Bill Brewer (Princeton) – Concern about Girls State Tournament at St. John Arena; support 22-game proposal; oppose coaching box change

 

11.                Girls Advisory Report – G.A.C. Board

A. Submitted concerns to Dr. Ross about St. John Arena as the site of Girls State Tournament – They would like students and fans on the floor level; they would like basketball lines on the court.

 

12.                 North-South Game ReportWally Vickers (Lakota East)/Dave Butcher(Pickerington North)

A.      Date – April 23, 2006

B.       Site – Capital University 

C.       Times – Div. III/IV Girls – 12:00 Div. I/II Girls 1:30 – Div. III/IV Boys – 3:30 Div. I/II Boys – 5:00

13.                 PROPOSALS for OHSAA - 1) Continue to pursue the 22-game proposal. Do not eliminate scrimmages or give any concessions

Ohio-Kentucky Game Report – Norm Persin

A.      Date – April 15, 2006

15.                 State Board Meeting Assignments – President Balogh handed out committee assignments and stated that he would send out board of control assignments at a later mailing.

 

16.                Hall Of Fame Report – Don Henderson 

A.      Class of 2006 – Jack Clouse (Celina), Paul Highnam (Danville), Ray Zawadski (Vandalia-Butler)  Honorary – Bob Shoemaker

1st – Burgei,  2nd- Nossaman  to accept the HOF Class. Motion passed 16-0.

 

17.                Hall Of Fame Banquet Report – Don Henderson

A.      Date – April 22, 2006

B.       Site – Airport Marriott 

C.       Time – 6:00 Social Hour 7:00 Dinner

D.      Cost - $25.00 per ticket

 

18.                 Paul Walker AwardNorm Persin  -  The 2006 winner is Bob Von Kaenel (Dover HS)   1st- Brewer  2nd –Rettig 

 

19.                 OHSBCA Clinic ReviewDave Krauss – Financial report will be at the winter meeting. Dave Krauss asked for someone to be a “Hospitality Chair” to assist with that portion of the clinic. He is interested in someone from the Columbus area. Names should be submitted to the executive committee.

 

20.                Hall of Fame Museum Update – Don Henderson/Doc Daugherty- They recommended that each district purchase a $500.00 dollar table for the HOF Dinner. They also explained that WBNS-TV in Columbus is in discussions with the committee about Banquet sponsorship and coverage. Doc also stated to get him nominees for the future in a timely fashion.

 

21.                Hooplines & Website Report - Pat Carroll – Turn in information to Pat Carroll for website updates. Articles and items for the next issue need to be turned in to Pat & Larry by December 15, 2005. They need pictures for all awards that are being given. They need pictures of All-Star Game Coaches, Paul Walker Award Winner, SEI Winners, and any other awards selected at this meeting. We need HOF Pictures as well.

 

22.                TOP 100 CLASSIC – Rich Venuto, Larry Wilson & Pat Carroll – It was voted to do this new project for the OHSBCA. Vote was 16-0 in favor. Each district will submit 10 nominees to Regional Directors. Regions would be the following:  Region I (Districts 1-4) Region II (Districts 5,10,11,12) Region III (Districts 6-9) Region IV (Districts 13-16)

It was recommended that each district have a selection committee that represents their entire district. All players will come from grades 9-11. Each district would be guaranteed a minimum of 5 players, and would submit 10-15 names to regional directors. When these names are submitted, the 15 players should be ranked with their best players listed first.  Those players selected would pay a $50.00 participation fee. The Regional Directors would have roughly 80 names from directors, and then 20 at-large selections to complete the 100 prospects. The Boys Event would be held at Capital University on the day prior to the N/S Game. The Girls event will be conducted in July with a date and site to be determined. Players selected would be contacted and return confirmation that they will attend by an established date.

 

23.                 Vote on OHSBCA Banner – Tabled until the Winter Meeting

 

24.           Vote on RAWLINGS Basketball – 2006-07 - Rawlings has approached the OHSBCA with a new ball design that would be a Soft Leather Wide Seam Basketball. The ball

                would remain at the same cost.  The vote was 12-4 in favor of the new design for next season.

 

                Vote on Family get together Friday of HOF Weekend – Was defeated 0-16 by directors.

27.                Mentor List – Dave Froelich – Submit names to him to establish a list for coaches to contact that would be statewide.

 

28.                Butch Rossi Award – It was suggested that a scholarship be given in his honor. 1stWalsh  2nd – Staley to add a $1,000 dollar scholarship in his honor. Motion passed by a 16-0 vote.

 

29.                Arnzen and 300 plus Century Winners – Joe Balogh – These will be handed out at the 2:00pm game during half-time. Joe will contact winners and the game announcer to get better communication for the presentation.

 

30.                Coaches Poll – Tom Rettig – It was voted by a 9-4 margin to continue doing the coaches poll. Send votes to ladywavehoops@aol.com  Each district should have voters.
